Arthur Lee "Dick" Moneymakere -
The Tennessee Moneymaker Family's History
I wanted to write to say thank you. You dont know me, but I am so happy I could cry.
I am working on my family tree and you solved a big puzzle for me, that I thought I had
lost. My maternal grandmother passed this past April, and with her went what was known
about her family. Her name was Ruby Louise Moneymaker Preisel. The only thing I had
was a short family history written by her sister to me about that branch of my family.
The only problem was it went as far as her grandfather Rufus Stephens Moneymaker.
I live in Oak Ridge, Tn, which as you know is in the heart of this families country.
I would like to provide you with the following concerning what info I had about my
branch of this family. I hope that this tidbit could be helpful to you or any other
that may need it.
My Great-Grandfather, who I still remember very well, was Aurther Lee"Dick" Moneymaker
who was born in Anderson Co, Tn on March 18, 1900. He stood at least 6' tall and was a
landscaper and most notably a farmer. If you travelled down Kingston Pike in
Knoxville, Tn just after you cleared the downtown area you come across a section with
stately homes that once ( still) were owned by Knoxville's elite. My grandfather is
responsible for most of the original landscaping for some of these homes. This was
about the early to mid 1920's. Around this time a postcard was sold in local stores
that featured a dirty tall man walking toward the camera down what was called Gay Street
in downtown Knoxville. The man as it turned out was my Great Grandfather Dick.
I've seen a couple of these postcards and one still floats somewhere in my immediate
family. My Grandfather spent much of the time managing a large farm near what is now
Oak Ridge. He married Edna Margaret Coward on Dec 25 ( The year escapes me right now,
however the cemetary were they lie is just down the road from me.)
To this union were born six children:
Aurther Lee Moneymaker Jr " Junior" ---- to date still living----
Howard Franklin Moneymaker "Tubby"
Ruby Louise Moneymaker Preisel ( My Grandmother)
Clantie Moneymaker May ( wrote the book )
Mary Moneymaker Bolten ----- To date still living----
Infant son born dead or died very shortly afterward
My greatgrandmother died in 1985 and my greatgrandfather passed away a day after his
88th b-day on March 19, 1988, I beleave of a broken heart.
I just hope this can be of some use please let me know if this will help someone and
once again thanks!
